Thileepan's Remembrance Week and the Ideological Panic of Colombo!

Author - Krishna Ambalavanar (For Elugathir)

In the history of the Tamil Eelam national liberation struggle, the month of September represents much more than a mere page on a calendar; it is a profound crucible of ideological purity immortalized by Thiyaga Deepam Thileepan, who weaponized his own physical body and dissolved into the sacred soil of Nallur for the sovereignty of our homeland. In recent days, the presence of Thileepan's memorial and his monument in Jaffna has struck a severe chord of ideological panic within the Colombo bureaucratic establishment and southern Sinhala-Buddhist chauvinistic circles. Facing complete political disenfranchisement following the recent arrest of former military intelligence chief Suresh Sallay and the structural downfall of major majoritarian symbols like Namal Rajapaksa, the southern right-wing apparatus has resurrected its toxic anti-Tamil rhetoric surrounding Thileepan's statue. The frantic outcry across Colombo media and state agents claiming that "terrorists are being memorialized in the North" serves as an irrefutable testament to how deeply the state apparatus still trembles before the unyielding moral defiance of the Eelam Tamil nation, even decades after the Mullivaikkal genocide.

Under the framework of the southern unitary constitution, the state officially permits and facilitates the grand commemoration of JVP leader Rohana Wijeweera—who led armed insurrections against the state resulting in the loss of thousands of Sinhalese lives. If such space exists within the state's legal mechanism, the Eelam Tamil people possess an absolute, non-negotiable moral right to remember Thiyaga Deepam Thileepan, who sacrificed his life in a non-violent fast-unto-death without a single drop of water, advancing five fundamental demands for his people. The genuine architects of terrorism are structural war criminals like Suresh Sallay and the Rajapaksa cartel who orchestrated the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. The absolute inability of the state apparatus to tolerate the basic human right to memorialize a sacred martyr, even decades after the armed conflict ended, permanently proves that no just or meaningful political solution for Tamils can ever be realized within the contemporary framework of the Sri Lankan state.

The genuine architects of terrorism are structural war criminals like Suresh Sallay and the Rajapaksa cartel who orchestrated the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.

In this context, the historical betrayals of Indian imperialism on Eelam soil must be rigorously analyzed during this remembrance week. The Indo-Lanka Accord enforced in 1987 was never designed to recognize the sovereign right of Eelam Tamils to self-determination. Instead, it was a calculated diplomatic conspiracy executed with regional hegemonistic arrogance to deploy foreign troops under the deceptive banner of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to structurally suppress the uncompromising liberation movement led by our national leadership. The five political demands put forward by Thileepan were not merely a critique of the genocidal Sri Lankan state; they formed a radical dialectical assault that unmasked the hypocritical moral facade of Indian imperialism before the global community. Every single hour Thileepan spent dehydrating on the stage at Nallur legally and historically stripped New Delhi of its moral authority on Tamil soil, dealing a fatal blow to the illusions of liberal interventionism.

Concurrently, 'Elugathir' meticulously deconstructs the deceptive double standards and covert diplomatic maneuvering executed by Colombo at the ongoing sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. The contemporary ruling administration in Colombo is aggressively deploying a performative anti-corruption drive against former political elites, utilizing domestic fiscal investigations to sanitize its international image and project itself as a progressive, reformed democracy to global financial actors and donor agencies from London to New York. However, institutional accountability for state-level financial fraud can never be equated with, nor function as a substitute for, accountability regarding wartime atrocities, the unearthing of the Chemmani mass graves, enforced disappearances, and the systematic genocide of the Tamil nation.

While Colombo performs this superficial anti-corruption theatre to deceive the international community, the state apparatus covertly accelerates its structural agenda of Sinhalisation and territorial erasure across the North-East. Utilizing the regulatory legal traps of the Department of Archaeology, traditional Tamil heritage sites—ranging from the ancient Vedukkunaari Hill Adi Shiva Temple in Nedunkeni and Kurunthur Malai in Mullaitivu to the vast grazing fields of Mylathamadu in Batticaloa—are being aggressively expropriated to establish state-backed Buddhist settlements. Escorted by heavy military protection, chauvinistic monks desecrate Tamil shrines and openly vilify indigenous worship as "false beliefs." Facing this everyday material reality on the ground, Colombo's performative rhetoric on 'reconciliation' inside the halls of Geneva stands exposed as the ultimate form of diplomatic hypocrisy.

Therefore, the remembrance week of Thiyaga Deepam Thileepan must transcend hollow annual rituals. The contemporary generation of the global Tamil diaspora must liberate themselves from the passive, consumerist traps of pop-culture obsession and hyper-commercialized cinematic distractions, realigning their collective consciousness with Thileepan's uncompromising ideological defiance. Our true historical responsibility to our martyrs and to the supreme sacrifice of Thileepan lies in systematically documenting these ongoing land grabs and international double standards with rigorous legal evidence, forcefully bringing the Sri Lankan state before the bar of international criminal justice.
